The REDD+ project (Reduction of Deforestation and Degradation) in the Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuja-Sonene National Park is located in the Madre de Dios region in Peru and covers a total area of 573,299.97 hectares. It is expected that over the first 10-year crediting period, over 4,570,000 CO₂ tons of emissions will be avoided. The total crediting period for the project is 20 years, from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2030.

Madre de Dios is a region in the Amazon basin that has the highest biodiversity index in the country. The region, also known as the “Biodiversity Capital of Peru,” is home to endangered species such as the Black Caiman, Harpy Eagle, and Giant Otter, as well as plant species of great economic value such as chestnuts, mahogany, and cedar. These tree species have high commercial value and are heavily deforested, further threatening the population of these species. The project also contributed to the establishment of associations such as the Cooperativa de Servicios Multiples Tambopata Candamo (COOPASER), benefiting a total of 339 cocoa producers, 285 of whom are business partners. COOPASER conducts various activities, such as providing personal technical assistance to its partners and supporting the transition to sustainable cocoa production.

In the project area of the Tambopata-Bahuaja Biodiversity Reserve, illegal alluvial gold mining is a persistent problem. The illegal miners use highly environmentally harmful extraction methods and technologies, including the use of mercury. The waste generated by mining activities is often disposed of into the Jayabe, Malinowski, and Huacamayo rivers, polluting the environment and damaging aquatic life. To counter this, the project promotes sustainable mining in the surrounding areas. In collaboration with the Association of Agricultural Producers and Gold Washers of Malinowski (APAYLOM), the project promotes mining techniques that reduce the use of mercury. This helps preserve water quality for human consumption.

The project sponsor is the Asociación para la Investigación y Desarrollo Integral (AIDER). AIDER, a Peruvian non-governmental organization, is a national leader in REDD+ and CDM projects and has more than 25 years of experience in forestry projects. AIDER’s work focuses on implementing sustainable forest management and restoring degraded land. AIDER also manages conservation areas and develops local capacities and social capital to promote sustainable development in Peru.

The project for the Tambopata-Bahuaja Biodiversity Reserve is registered as a REDD+ (Reduction of Deforestation and Degradation) project in the Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.

The sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN SDG), also known as Global Goals, are a framework developed by the United Nations as a universal call to action. The 17 Global Goals are interconnected and recognize that actions in one area affect outcomes in others. The Global Goals aim to address critical social, economic, and environmental challenges to ensure sustainable development for all people by 2030. The reporting framework provides governments, businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders with a structured approach to track their contributions and progress toward achieving the SDGs.
