The BioLite Improved Cook Stoves Programme aims to provide access to clean energy for 20 million people by distributing more efficient biomass cookstoves. These stoves will replace the current traditional and inefficient stoves in households in India, Kenya, and Uganda. During the seven-year project duration, from January 19, 2018, to January 18, 2025, the project is expected to save an estimated 3,000,000 CO₂ tons in emissions.

Traditional cookstoves in India, Kenya, and Uganda have an efficiency of about 10% and tend to cause incomplete combustion of fuel, releasing pollutants like carbon monoxide into the air. As part of the program, improved cookstoves with an efficiency of at least 25% will be distributed to rural and urban households. By replacing traditional inefficient stoves and open-fire cooking, the consumption of wood and charcoal will be reduced. Indoor air quality will also improve due to the more complete combustion of the fuel.

In Kenya, 9 out of 10 people in suburban and rural areas rely on charcoal or firewood for cooking. The BioLite program includes the distribution of BioLite HomeStoves, a wood stove with a fan that reduces indoor toxic emissions by 90% and cuts wood fuel consumption by 50%. With cleaner and more efficient combustion, indoor pollutant emissions are reduced by 90%, lowering the risk of respiratory diseases. The HomeStove also serves a dual function, generating electricity from the flames through its patented thermoelectric direct-coupling system. During cooking, enough power is generated to fully charge a mobile phone or power an LED light for an evening.

The project implementer, BioLite India Pvt Limited, is heavily focused on developing technologies that can provide clean and affordable energy to households on a large scale.

The sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN SDG), also known as Global Goals, are a framework developed by the United Nations as a universal call to action. The 17 Global Goals are interconnected and recognize that actions in one area affect outcomes in others. The Global Goals aim to address critical social, economic, and environmental challenges to ensure sustainable development for all people by 2030. The reporting framework provides governments, businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders with a structured approach to track their contributions and progress toward achieving the SDGs.
